KOIN is a place rather than a group. According to the official description, it is the name of the open-innovation cafe on the third floor of Kyoto Economic Center, operated by the Kyoto Industrial Creation Forest, a general incorporated association established by Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City, and the Kyoto business community. It is an entrance for people interested less in technology itself than in how technology and business move within the Kyoto region.

Founded in Kyoto in February 2019, it counts 153 completed events over 7 years (as of 2026-08-10, from connpass public data). We checked the official pages of the following group but could not confirm any recent sessions. It may have resumed, or it may be active somewhere other than connpass. Please check the official page for the latest information.

• E-Ripple (Kansai Student Engineer Community): kansai-eng-net.connpass.com (verified 2026-08-02). The connpass group listed four public events, the most recent of which ended on February 17, 2024. As of August 2026 we could not confirm any recent session.

For students, a practical approach is to combine a university club or research group with events in Kyoto and Kansai that are mainly attended by working professionals. Several of the confirmed groups above hold sessions that welcome students.

Three things to check when choosing a community in Kyoto

After looking through the list, checking the following three points before registering helps you avoid a poor fit on the day.

1. Event frequency

A group that meets monthly requires a very different relationship from one centered on a few large annual events. Go back through the past-events section of the connpass group and check how often it has met over the past six months to one year. The “primary source checked” lines in this article were written from the same viewpoint.

2. Accessibility

Whether the listing states that first-time or solo participants are welcome, what the fee is, whether the session is on a weekday evening or a weekend, and whether online attendance is possible. These determine whether you can keep attending. Because fees differ by session, this article does not estimate amounts; we ask you to check on each group's registration page.

3. The theme and your current phase

A technology-specific group suits a phase of studying one technology deeply, while a networking or co-working group suits a phase of first getting to know IT engineers in Kyoto. Participation is harder to sustain when the theme does not match your interests.

You can also keep loose ties to several groups and use them according to your topic or current phase. There is no need to narrow to one.

Characteristics of the Kyoto region

Community activity in Kyoto has characteristics that come from its geography.

First, the breadth of venue resources. Temples, machiya townhouses, university facilities, and public facilities sit close together within the city, and technical activity takes place in spaces unlike ordinary meeting rooms. Miyako de IT also continues to hold sessions at temples including Butsugenji in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto.

Second, the short distance between academia, industry, and government. Researchers at Kyoto University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Ritsumeikan University, and Doshisha University; companies headquartered in the city; and co-creation venues run by government and industry such as KOIN all sit within a compact area. Individual groups also organize joint sessions that use these connections.
