How we edit these series

These series preserve the decisions that can only be learned in the field. Rather than repeating general advice from books or the web, they document concrete cases from Kyoto: particular audiences, particular venues, and the relationships required to run a community. They are written for organizers building communities in their own regions or organizations, and for engineers, company teams, and researchers interested in Kyoto's technology culture.

A series that examines each pillar of the TEMPLE model—Theme, Environment, Members, Persistence, Local, and Evolution—distilled from 7 years and 165 events of practice.

This series examines Miyako de IT's TEMPLE model (Theme, Environment, Members, Persistence, Local, and Evolution) one pillar at a time. It shares operational knowledge for a framework that regional IT talent communities can adapt.

Articles are assigned to each of TEMPLE's six pillars: choosing a theme, designing Kyoto-specific venues and formats, gathering and retaining participants, systems for continuity, external partnerships and regional connection, and annual evolution.

This series focuses on engineers working in Kyoto, companies based here, and university researchers. It records the depth of Kyoto's technology scene through interviews and implementation notes.

It follows Kyoto's distinctive technology ecosystem—from established companies including Nintendo, OMRON, and Kyocera to the Symbol blockchain community, generative-AI startups, and university-industry projects—rather than treating Kyoto as a smaller version of Tokyo.

This series gathers stories from the distinctive venues Miyako de IT has used: temples, machiya townhouses, university campuses, the Former Assembly Hall of the Kyoto Prefectural Government Office, and soba restaurants. It treats venue selection itself as part of community experience design.

Each venue—Butsugen-ji, Daiko-ji, Koukando, Takahashi, the Former Assembly Hall, and Taisho University Kyoto Academia—gets an independent article about the space, the relationship with its operators, and the experience that venue makes possible.

This series abstracts successes and failures from 7 years and 165 events through the perspective of a community organizer. It compares them with IT community cases in Japan and abroad to identify repeatable principles.

Topics include designing return visits, pitfalls in co-hosted events, participation in municipal working groups, launching independent events after a hackathon award, and practices for co-hosting with overseas communities.
