About CODE BASE OKINAWA
Proto Solution opened CODE BASE OKINAWA in Ginowan in August 2017 under a concept of developing the Ginowan west coast as an IT beach. Engineers, creators, and people beginning to learn technology use the lab for study groups, hands-on workshops, and programming education. On weekdays from 10:00 to 20:00 it is normally available as a free open space, and its connpass group documents continuing community events. It reopened after renovation in June 2019.
The Okinawa IT Innovation Strategy Center (ISCO), based in Naha, separately supports the prefecture's IT industry. It does not operate CODE BASE OKINAWA; this report distinguishes the two organizations.
Why a Kyoto community held an event in Okinawa
Miyako de IT began in Kyoto in 2019 and has accumulated seven years, 153 events, and 623 members. After monthly sessions at Kyoto temples, townhouses, and university campuses, its operations increasingly considered connections beyond Kyoto.
Regional community members frequently move, travel, or receive work assignments elsewhere. A place to meet again in another region can preserve relationships for both organizers and members.
The organizer used a visit to Okinawa during a holiday period to borrow CODE BASE OKINAWA and test a shared work session for a Kyoto member and Okinawa-based participants. In Miyako de IT's TEMPLE community model, this is an application of L for Local and external collaboration.
What happened on the day
Three people attended. The standard format combines working time with a short report, but this pilot emphasized uninterrupted individual work.
CODE BASE OKINAWA is an open shared workspace rather than fixed seating. Compared with Kyoto temple and townhouse venues, its furniture and layout resemble a conventional coworking space. Its location near the coast and natural light created a different environment. With only three people, the session provided substantial focused time.
This was close to the original idea of a mokumoku session: people quietly completing their own work. The objective was observation and a regional-collaboration pilot, not attendance growth.
The significance of connecting Kyoto and Okinawa
First, reciprocal participation matters. A Kyoto member visiting Okinawa can remain one-way unless an Okinawa member later has a reason to visit Kyoto. This pilot provides information for designing that reciprocal relationship.
Second, the venue community should be a partner rather than merely a room provider. CODE BASE OKINAWA has its own connpass group and event culture, making future two-way participation more realistic.
