Mokumoku Meetup #62

Summary

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, Miyako de IT held Mokumoku Meetup #62 with Digital Nomad Kyoto at Daikoji in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. About 10 people brought their own projects, including IT engineers, people preparing to start AI development, and people experimenting with IoT. Sharing one table made conversation happen naturally, and Daikoji's vice head priest joined the group as a participant.

The in-person session ran from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and was co-hosted with Digital Nomad Kyoto. The original event page is available on connpass.

Event overview

One table made conversation easy

Participants worked on their own tasks while sitting around one large table in the tatami room.

A mokumoku meetup is primarily a self-directed working session, but the shared table made it easy to speak up between tasks, ask a nearby participant a question, or briefly compare what people were working on. Focused work and informal conversation existed in the same space, creating a relaxed and sociable atmosphere throughout the session.

Different themes: software development, AI, and IoT

The participants brought a range of interests and projects. Alongside IT engineers were people who wanted to begin AI development and people working through trial and error with IoT.

Because everyone works on a topic of their own choosing, participants do not need to share the same technology stack or level of experience. Seeing what someone else is exploring can itself become an entry point to a new technology or way of thinking.

Daikoji's vice head priest joined the table

Daikoji's vice head priest also joined the meetup as a participant.

The temple was therefore not only a venue for the event. A person from the host venue took part in the same working session and conversation, reducing the usual separation between the people providing a place and the community using it.

Lunch at a nearby Vietnamese restaurant

After the meetup ended at 1:00 p.m., participants who wanted to continue talking went to a nearby Vietnamese restaurant for lunch. People chose dishes including gapao rice, banh mi, and pho, and the conversation continued in a different setting from the working session.

Returning to Daikoji after Meetup #57

Miyako de IT previously held Meetup #57 at Daikoji on May 23, 2026, and returned to the same Fushimi venue for this session.

Working with laptops in a temple tatami room is different from meeting in an office or coworking space. At this session, arranging everyone around one table also showed how the physical layout can support both concentration and casual conversation.
