A co-hosted event with craft-beer venue CRAFT BANK invited people to build while enjoying a beer, creating a meeting point between technology and culture and broadening the community.

Background

Co-working and study sessions are familiar within engineering culture, but the community wanted to reach people interested in technology who found formal study groups intimidating. It began exploring formats that cross technology with everyday culture.

Trigger

CRAFT BANK’s idea of doing something with a beer in hand resonated with Miyako de IT. The partners agreed to co-host an event under the name Brew & Build.

How it developed

Brew & Build is a series created with craft-beer venue CRAFT BANK around the idea of building with a beer in hand. CRAFT BANK’s guiding idea resonated with Miyako de IT. Their first point of contact was a Kyoto food-culture event focused on craft beer at CRAFT BANK in May 2025.

The event archive records two Brew & Build editions: a midsummer development event at the craft brewery on July 5, 2025, and the CRAFT BANK Brew & Build hackathon pitch event on July 21. Participants worked on individual development projects and ideation over craft beer, while technology talks and beer tasting produced an atmosphere distinct from both a standard co-working session and a networking event.

The format changes who the community can reach. Designers, planners, and entrepreneurs who are interested in technology but find study groups formal joined, producing a first-time-participant rate of about 50%, higher than usual co-working sessions. The Technology × Culture model can extend to other partners, and collaborations with machiya cafes and galleries are under consideration.
